Oh Deer! Community Fawning Over the New Greybarn Apartment Centerpiece
The great migration of Tony Tasset’s sculpture, Deer, 2015, recently culminated on the great lawn of Rechler Equity Partners’ luxury apartment development, Greybarn Amityville. Deer, was most recently displayed at the Berkshires Aldrich Museum, where it had a year-long rest on its journey. The company’s co-managing partners, Mitchell and Gregg Rechler’s affinity for art stems from father and uncle, respectively, William Rechler and is reflected in the developments’ overall appeal as well as a key component of each building’s aesthetic.
“This sculpture by Tony Tasset exemplifies the essence of what we routinely incorporate into our properties, both commercial and residential,” said Mitchell Rechler, co-managing partner of Rechler Equity Partners. “As Tasset said upon the creation of Deer, this sculpture represents the highest conceptual ambitions, which we at Rechler Equity strive for with every new and existing project. We are excited to share this piece of art with the Greybarn residents and are confident they will enjoy it as much as we do.”
Tony Tasset is one of the United States most well-known and respected artists of today. As the name might suggest, Deer is an eight-foot tall realistic creation of a fawn, which was first displayed in Miami, Florida. Some of Tasset’s most famous work includes Eyeball—his most well-known sculpture—“Hot Dog Man,” “Bear,” and “Rainbow.” Tasset’s work is included in permanent collections at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the San Francisco Museum of Art; and several other important institutions.
A New Focal Point for Residents to Enjoy
“Mitchell and I are avid proponents of the arts and have made a tradition of installing a sculpture to serve as a focal point for each of our new projects,” stated Gregg Rechler. “This Tasset piece stood out as soon as we saw it and will be proudly displayed on Greybarn’s Great Lawn for our residents to enjoy. It’s incredible to see the relationship between such different but equally impactful and beautiful types of art—architecture and sculpture.”
Deer is planned to remain at Greybarn’s Great Lawn for one year before its final migration to its permanent home at the Canoe Place Inn in Hampton Bays. Tasset’s Deer originally traveled from the artist/fabricator in Illinois and the work was fabricated in Illinois as well.
Other versions of the Deer can be found in Laumeier Sculpture Park (St. Louis, Missouri), Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art(Bentonville, Arkansas), and Collection of Art OMI (Gent, NY).
“Once construction of the Canoe Place Inn in Hampton Bays is completed, Deer will finish the final leg of its journey,” add Mitchell Rechler. “We know the sculpture will serve as a conversation piece for guests as well as residents who will be able to enjoy the only deer on the east end without an appetite for their gardens.”
